Strickler Emergency Assistance
Aging Resources of Central Iowa created the Strickler Emergency Assistance Program to prevent unmet financial needs from threatening an older individual’s ability to remain independent in their own home. Under the program, grants up to $100 are awarded to pay for needed items and services for low-income older Individuals in Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Polk, Story, and Warren Counties.
Since 1994, the Strickler Emergency Assistance Program has provided appropriate medical devices, medication, community-based services, or emergency financial assistance to low-income, frail, and vulnerable elders in central Iowa. The program operates in partnership with a network of existing human service agencies to identify older persons in need. To date, over 300 older central Iowans have benefited from this program.
Very few human service agencies or projects address the short-term emergency needs of frail elders in central Iowa. When the need Is greater than $100, funds are combined with other aging network providers’ resources to bridge the funding gap.
The Strickler Emergency Assistance Program is named after the late Reverand Gayle V. Strickler, Pastor Emeritus of the Urbandale United Church of Christ and long-time advocate for the older population. Rev. Strickler was actively involved with the programs and services of Aging Resources of Central Iowa since its inception in 1974.
