Holiday Meals
Holidays can be very difficult times for homebound older persons in our community.
Regular suppliers of home-delivered meals do not deliver on holidays and shopping is not a possibility for this group of frail elders.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are especially depressing for persons who are isolated from family, friends, and outside contacts. A brief visit from a friendly volunteer delivering a holiday meal may be the only bright spot on these important holidays.
Each year, Aging Resources of Central Iowa provides over 1,000 holiday meals to homebound and isolated older persons in central Iowa. Holiday meals are normally purchased at reduced cost from local restaurants, grocery store deli’s, and hospitals. Many volunteers happily give up a few hours of their holiday to provide this assistance for those in need.
