For those who are 60 years of age or older, there are 35 congregate meal sites located throughout the 8 counties in Aging Resources of Central Iowa’s service area. Congregate meals are hot, nutritious meals served at senior centers and other community locations. Meal sites range from serving 10 meals per day to over 140 meals at the largest location. Transportation is usually available to meal sites if needed.

In addition to delicious meals and great conversation, many meal sites offer activities. Here are just a few of the exciting things going on at senior centers in central Iowa:

  • Exercise:  Tai Chi, yoga, Zumba Gold, Exercise for Arthritis, walking clubs, line dancing, pickleball
  • Arts & Crafts:  Pottery, knitting, crocheting, Sew-cial, scrapbooking, Golden Thread Society
  • Music & Entertainment:  Bands, guest speakers, games & cards, trivia, holiday celebrations
  • Classes & Groups:  History, computer/technology, drawing, caregiver support group, falls prevention classes, chronic disease self-management classes

Some come once a year, while others come every weekday. Congregate meal programs are for all people over the age of 60, regardless of health status, income, or ability to prepare meals.
