Older Iowans Legislature -
Organizational Information

It is the purpose of the Older Iowans Legislature to "Pursue Quality of Life for Older Iowans."

The Older Iowans Legislature (OIL) was formed in 1978 to keep Iowa's elders informed about legislation and how to process their legislative needs. Instigated by the Department of Elder Affairs (DEA) and Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs), the Older Iowans Legislature was officially authorized by the State legislature. In 2004, the Older Iowans Legislature was financially supported by the Department of Elder Affairs, but due to financial constrictions, the DEA and the AAAs formally severed financial ties with OIL.

Believing in the mission of the Older Iowans Legislature, a dedicated group of elders formed an independent organization of OIL along with support from Aging Resources of Central Iowa and membership dues. As an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization registered in the State of Iowa, the Older Iowans Legislature is the only independent voice sponsoring bills for elders before the state legislature.

Since its inception, an analysis of bills generated and filed with the State Legislature revealed that 42% received significant attention. Of those bills, 80% were enacted into law, either wholly or in part - - en enviable record!

Declaration of Independence - The Older Iowans Legislature (OIL) has declared itself independent of any unique influences from either the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs or the Iowa Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
